Currently we are solely dependent on fossil fuels for our energy needs. Oil, coal, and gas supply 40%, 27% and 23% of the world’s energy respectively. However as the infographic below shows, over the next 100 years these will run out and more needs to be done to adopt renewable energy sources.
Governments around the world have been tasked to reduce their carbon emissions by the year 2020 so more is being invested in alternative energy sources.
Solar, wind and tidal energy technologies are just three examples of renewable energy sources and the infographic shows how these work.
We are already seeing some amazing examples of countries adopting renewable energies. For example the Alta Wind Energy Center in California is the one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world. The Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Plant in South Korea is the largest in the world and Agua Caliente Solar project in Arizona is one of the biggest solar power plants. All of these are expected to increase their output by the year 2020 to help reach their countries targets.
